Children, families, dog walkers and other park users in Hackney are having to avoid dog mess on paths, grass and play areas. We want Hackney Council to take this seriously by installing clearer signage, providing more bins where needed, running regular enforcement patrols and issuing fines to owners who don’t clean up. We also ask the council to publish a short plan and regular progress updates so the community can see real action.

The issue

Dog fouling in our local Hackney park has become a growing problem. Paths, grass and play areas are regularly left with mess that children, families, and others have to walk around. It’s unpleasant, unhygienic, and unfair to the many people who use the park responsibly — including dog owners who always clean up. People tell us they avoid parts of the park, and parents worry about young children playing on the grass.

This is a community space that should be welcoming and safe for everyone. We know most dog owners are responsible; the problem is a small number of people who don’t clear up and a lack of clear signage, bins in the right places, and visible enforcement. With better signs, more bins where they’re needed, regular patrols, and targeted fines for repeat offenders, we can make the park cleaner and more enjoyable for everyone.

We are asking Hackney Council to act promptly and to involve local residents and park users in decisions about sign and bin placement so solutions work for the people who use the park every day.

The ask

We ask Hackney Council to treat dog fouling in our local park as a priority and to take these specific, achievable steps: 1) Within 4 weeks carry out a short audit of the park and publish a clear plan and timetable. 2) Within 8–12 weeks install more visible signage at park entrances and near play areas explaining the rules and how to report fouling, and consult with local users on sign placement. 3) Within 12 weeks install extra dog-waste bins where the audit shows they are needed, and empty them regularly. 4) Start regular enforcement patrols by council officers (at least weekly, with extra patrols at peak times) and issue fines to owners who repeatedly fail to clean up. 5) Publish enforcement statistics and progress updates every three months so the community can see results.
